If you read our blog, you may have heard of firmware. This article's goal is to inform those unfamiliar with this word and the software it creates. Firmware is a computer program that manages and controls hardware devices or other programs that determines the sequence in which these things happen. It largely resides loaded into a special type of memory called ROM (read-only memory) on devices such as printers, modems, routers and smartphones. Occasionally we also refer to it as embedded software or embedded control program (ECP). All these definitions refer to the same thing: software that lives in a device like an iPad or iPhone and provides instructions for its operation. Firmware is a fairly common entity used to manage and control hardware components within a machine. It acts as a program that can be changed and can be "updated" by the user. It contains the instructions that allow the device to know what it needs to do, when it needs to do it, and how to do it. For example, you might have a printer that has firmware installed on it as part of its management software, which allows the printer to keep track of how much ink is remaining in its internal tanks and when those tanks need refilling. Firmware only runs on devices that have special hardware support for storing firmware. Firmware is not a program, however. It is more of a software asset or file that is stored on a device like an iPhone. Firmware is the hardware-specific software program, such as the printer's firmware, which allows it to operate and operate properly. A firmware update isn't really an update of the software; rather, it's an installation of new or different code into your iPhone. The new code enables the phone to perform new functions and also lets you know how fast and at what time of day your battery depletes (and how to improve it). It enables the phone to be more intuitive with its functions so that you have a better experience. Firmware updates are not intended to fix bugs, but rather improve the overall performance of your device. There are two ways you can update your firmware: using iTunes or using iCloud. iTunes is Apple's free application that allows you to manage files on an iPhone or iPad, as well as install new software for it. This software has been used by many users since its introduction 10 years ago in 2003 for this task. iCloud is Apple's online service that keeps all your content in sync between your iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer and the Apple servers. These two services are also the only ways you can update the software of your Apple TV, iTunes, or Apple Watch. As with all updates (for example, when you purchase the latest version of iTunes), they are not free, even though you can purchase them at any time. A firmware update costs $19 per device is required every year to keep your device up-to-date. This cost is in addition to your original iPhone or iPad purchase price (including its monthly service plan). cfa1e77820
